There are two models of the adapter: RAP2064 and RAP64C.

RAP2064

The RAP2064 version works best with:

• Commodore VIC-20
• Commodore 64

And does function well with:

• Commodore 64C (see details below)

If you wish to only own one adapter (maybe you have one PSU and you rotate among models), this is probably the most universal choice. It will get the job done just fine.

RAP64C

The RAP64C version works best with the Commodore 64C and has some changes to better accommodate its unique shape. This includes an added rib for keeping it better vertically squared to the side as well.

PLEASE NOTE: All models being mentioned here refer to original, 1980s-era Commodore computers. This is not compatible with the Commodore 64 Ultimate, which uses a more modern power adapter (but still sticks out of the side of the machine). 😉

My preference is to attach it to the power supply cable’s plug and just treat it as your connector going forward. You would insert it and remove it from the computer as needed, leaving it on the end of the cable itself.

You can certainly just plug it into the side of the computer and leave it there, removing the power connector from the right-angle adapter when needed.

I will note that the female DIN plugs in these units are fairly tight, so if it’s already plugged into the side of your computer, I’d suggest securing it against computer with one hand while inserting or removing the power supply plug with the other. This helps minimize a levering effect that might put undue strain on your aging computer’s precious port.

In my experience, generally not. It slightly wraps around the back edge of the computer next to cartridge port to provide stability and to bring its main benefit of narrowing the footprint of your machine on the desk. Normal cartridge use, for instance, is completely unaffected as there is an ample gap between the two. I, for example, have a FastLoad cartridge inserted virtually all the time.

That said, if you have a device that plugs into the cartridge port that is wider than the port where it meets the back of the computer (specifically in the direction of the power switch side), then there could be a space conflict that prevents your use of the adapter. If that is something you have plugged in at all times, then this adapter might not work for you.

At the moment it is only available in black.

Why just black?

As much as I’d like to offer them color matched to the various models, it’s hard to nail that in a way that looks good. The bigger challenge is that these 30+ year old machines have usually faded, yellowed or otherwise color shifted even in imperceptible ways making that match even more of a moving target.

RAP just refers to Right-Angle Power.

I’ll admit that I have fought the constant urge to name it CRAP64 (Commodore Right-Angle Power) – NOT because it speaks to product quality – but because that really fits my snarky tendencies. Unfortunately, my wife hates the idea, Commodore might not like me using their name in a product, and it precludes carrying the naming format into other possible adapters for non-Commodore retro machines if I get the urge to design some.

I’m seriously considering it! The power adapter was something I needed, but I was finding it hard to get the specific parts in small quantities for my own needs. That’s when I decided it was an interesting opportunity to experiment with design, larger quantity parts sourcing, manufacturing, and online sales of something I’ve made.

If it goes well, I might add other creations as well as carry some of the other retro products that I use and love.

Products are shipped by USPS Ground Advantage. Depending on your distance from Virginia, the delivery time is generally 2-5 days once shipped.

Currently, I’m keeping it simple and shipping only within the U.S. I’d love to ship internationally in time, though, so please do contact me to express interest and I’ll provide an update.

If you are unsatisfied with your item, please contact me within 14 days of receiving it so I can try to help correct any issues or simply process a refund.
